Our species mingled, developed new technologies, pioneered fresh islands, and learned to enjoy times of peace. Our victories for good in the golden age set us on a positive heading while we were left alone by outsiders. Even the Kremling attacks grew further and fewer between until a ceasefire was called between the second Donkey Kong and General Kalypso. It's surprising how much of our woes during the Golden Age of Heroes were revealed to be due to human intervention. Our unique positioning between opposing trade winds meant that our islands' shorelines barely rose a few inches compared to the surrounding world's hundreds of feet. Shorelines all over the world were completely redrawn. New mountains were swallowed up and new islands born. The humans' towns, industries, and families were swallowed up by the waves, quickly ending both their culture of extreme recklessness and the Golden Age of Heroes in the Rare Archipelago. In the years since, the largely human-dominated lands covering the distant reaches of the world became enamored with the uses of gasoline, electricity, and something called 'Dogecoin.' Though not their intention, these actions of excess led to a steep rise in water levels in every ocean. Good, in all of its many appearances, forever won the battle. When evil forces marched in the land, there was always someone there to stop them. Many attempted coups made by the crocodilian Kremling Army were quashed by the resilient, if lazy, Kong family of Donkey Kong Island. Maniacal industrialists were stopped by warriors of nature, Yooka and Laylee. A long-prophesied bear and bird team drove the witch Gruntilda out of her squatting on the Isle o' Hags. The evil Panther King was undone by a drunk, but determined squirrel. "Just over 300 years ago or so, a 'Golden Age of Heroes' dominated a small chain of islands in the Atlantic Ocean called the Rare Archipelago.

Here's a little backstory ripped from the in-universe character Elder Chunky Kong the 5th's research notes: We've had a lot of fun with it, so I want to make sure it's logged somewhere. In the meantime, I thought I'd use this thread to detail what's happened so far in the campaign I'm currently running in this setting and what kinds of stuff you can do in a DKU D&D game. At some point, I'd like to share my guide to the Rare Archipelago in a collected body of work called Elder Chunky's Guide to the Rare Archipelago so everyone can play their own tabletop DKU adventure, but it's not finished yet. I'm working on making more races, subclasses, backgrounds, and homebrewed magical items too.

I've designed nine new playable races and two new subclasses compatible with D&D in addition to writing a bunch of information on the setting itself and how it should work. So, I took it upon myself and made something close-ish, a Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition campaign setting. For obvious legal reasons, places like the Sea of Thieves and the Isle o' Hags are not able to be used in a game by the same studios who can use Donkey Kong Island and the Mushroom Kingdom, so the existence of such a game is impossible outside of distant approximations in the form of Minecraft or Super Smash Bros. I've had something in my mind similar to the way World of Warcraft works a massively multiplayer game where everyone can be their own Kremling, Kong, Bee, or Bear, or even some of the Mushroom Kingdom races as they are known to travel to the Rare Archipelago from time to time. For quite a while now, I've wanted to play an RPG spanning the entirety of the DKU.
